Abstract

ABSTRACT: this article examines the role of the care of the soul (epimeleia tēs psychēs) in the opening of Plato’s Protagoras. It argues that the initial scene between Socrates and the young Hippocrates is not merely a dramatic prelude but plays a decisive philosophical role in the structure of the dialogue. By warning the young man about the dangers of entrusting his soul to sophistic instruction, Socrates introduces a fundamental pedagogical principle: before seeking knowledge or intellectual prestige, one must critically examine those to whom one entrusts one’s moral and intellectual formation. This preliminary care of the soul functions as a preparation for the philosophical inquiry that follows and establishes a contrast between Socratic pedagogy and the sophistic model of education. The analysis suggests that such preparation constitutes both an epistemological and moral condition for the practice of Socratic dialectic. Keywords: Plato; Protagoras; care of the soul; sophistry; philosophical education.
