A POLÊMICA ENTRE THOMPSON E ALTHUSSER: UM RESSOAR DA DISPUTA FILOSÓFICA ENTRE EMPIRISMO E IDEALISMO NA TRADIÇÃO MARXISTA THE CONTROVERSY BETWEEN THOMPSON AND ALTHUSSER: AN ECHO OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL DISPUTE BETWEEN EMPIRICISM AND IDEALISM IN THE MARXIST TRADITION

Abstract
ABSTRACT: This article examines E. P. Thompson’s critique of Louis Althusser in The Poverty of Theory, interpreting their controversy as a late expression of the longstanding conflict between empiricism and rationalism within the Marxist tradition. Thompson, shaped by the British empiricist outlook and committed to the primacy of historical experience, accuses Althusser of constructing an aprioristic, closed, and idealist theoretical system—one that, he argues, obscures the open, investigative, and materialist character of Marx’s project. To contextualize this opposition, the article traces its philosophical roots to ancient Greek thought, especially the Socratic–Platonic distinction between techné and empeiria, to Platonic and Aristotelian theories of knowledge, and to the medieval dispute over Universals between realists and nominalists. The Thompson–Althusser debate thus appears as a Marxist reenactment of the foundational tension between theoretical apriorism and concrete experience. The article concludes that Thompson views Althusserian structuralism as a relapse into the idealism criticized by Marx, whereas Thompson defends a historically grounded Marxism open to empirical complexity and to the “frontiers of the unknown.” Keywords: Thompson; Althusser; empiricism; rationalism; Marxism; epistemology; structuralism; historical experience.
