Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article advances a political and philosophical reading of Plato’s Gorgias, focusing on the tensions between rhetoric and philosophy, power and justice, and appearance and truth amid Athens’ late fifth-century crisis. Building on E. R. Dodds’s claim that it is Plato’s “most modern” dialogue, the study shows how Plato links sophistic pedagogy to moral disorder, dramatizes the polis’s decline, and presents the agathon as the source of individual and civic restoration. The analysis follows the dialogue’s dramatic progression—Gorgias, Polus, Callicles—highlighting the physis–nomos conflict, the critique of rhetoric as flattery, the rejection of tyranny, and the soul’s illness. It ends with a reading of the eschatological myth, where philosophical judgment supersedes political authority. The Gorgias emerges as the first formulation of philosophy as political therapy. Keywords: Plato; Gorgias; rhetoric; justice; agathon; polis; political philosophy.
