The objective of this work was to propose a classification of plagiarism in academic writings with academic and legal perspective. As a result, a broader classification was obtained that addresses acts of misconduct in academic writings, in which plagiarism is framed under three conducts proposed in the legal perspective: copying, appropriation and use. The approach is descriptive through a bibliographic review on plagiarism classifications in the academic field, contrasted with the characteristics of plagiarism from the legal field. As a result of the literature review, a broader classification was obtained that addresses acts of misconduct in the academic writings, where plagiarism is framed, under three conducts proposed in the legal perspective: copying, appropriation and use. The classification allows to know better the dimensions and to define the field of action of the academic field in the search for solutions and strategies for the attention and prevention of the phenomenon of plagiarism and misconduct. This classification can be used for understanding the concept of plagiarism in student training processes.
