"RUA DA TONTURA”: UMA ETNOGRAFIA DA PEGAÇÃO GAY NA RUA SIMPLÍCIO MENDES NO CENTRO DE TERESINA "DIZZINESS STREET": AN ETHNOGRAPHY OF GAY CRUISING ON SIMPLÍCIO MENDES STREET IN DOWNTOWN TERESINA

Abstract

RESUMO: A presente etnografia mergulha nas intricadas dinâmicas da pegação gay que se desenrolam na movimentada rua Simplício Mendes no centro de Teresina, em especial o trecho que corresponde à parte que fica atrás da Praça Saraiva. Ao explorar este fenômeno social, o estudo revela a complexidade das interações humanas, os espaços de sociabilidade e as relações de poder que caracterizam esse peculiar cenário urbano. A pesquisa envolveu observação participante, entrevistas e análise visual, proporcionando uma visão holística das práticas de pegação em um dos pontos mais emblemáticos da cidade. Descortinando o cotidiano desses encontros, o estudo evidencia a construção de identidades individuais e coletivas, destacando a importância do espaço público como arena para expressões de afetividade e desejos. A narrativa etnográfica revela também as negociações constantes entre os frequentadores, suas estratégias de comunicação não verbal e as nuances das relações que se estabelecem momentaneamente nesse ambiente efervescente. Além disso, são explorados os desafios enfrentados pelos participantes ao buscarem formas de resistência e aceitação em uma sociedade que, por vezes, ainda lida com a diversidade sexual de maneira ambígua. Este estudo contribui para uma compreensão mais profunda das dinâmicas sociais que permeiam as ruas do centro de Teresina, destacando a importância de se considerar a diversidade de experiências humanas e as formas de resistência cultural que emergem em espaços urbanos específicos. ABSTRACT: This ethnography delves into the intricate dynamics of gay cruising that unfold on the busy Simplício Mendes street in the center of Teresina, especially the stretch that corresponds to the part behind Saraiva Square. By exploring this social phenomenon, the study reveals the complexity of human interactions, the spaces of sociability and the power relations that characterize this peculiar urban scenario. The research involved participant observation, interviews and visual analysis, providing a holistic view of cruising practices in one of the city's most emblematic spots. Unveiling the daily life of these meetings, the study highlights the construction of individual and collective identities, highlighting the importance of public space as an arena for expressions of affection and desires. The ethnographic narrative also reveals the constant negotiations between the regulars, their non-verbal communication strategies and the nuances of the relationships that are momentarily established in this effervescent environment. In addition, the challenges faced by participants in seeking forms of resistance and acceptance in a society that sometimes still deals with sexual diversity in an ambiguous way are explored. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the social dynamics that permeate the streets of downtown Teresina, highlighting the importance of considering the diversity of human experiences and the forms of cultural resistance that emerge in specific urban spaces.
